Fire Station No. 47San Antonio, Texas

Overview

This new fire station is located in the fast-growing northwest quadrant of San Antonio at the gateway to the Texas Hill Country. The sloping 7-acre site is heavily wooded and adjoins an upscale residential community.

The new building is carefully sited along a relatively flat clearing in the vegetation, allowing existing trees and understory to go undisturbed and diminishing the visual impact of the 11,000 s.f. building with respect to its nearby residential neighbors. The residential scale of the design is further reinforced by placing fire apparatus and emergency vehicle bays on opposite ends of the plan, thus reducing the apparent size and scale of the large garage spaces.

The exterior is sheathed in a combination of limestone, stucco, and galvanized metal siding, with a standing seam metal roof. This material palette is appropriate to the building’s hill country location and complements its residential setting.
