Hops & HoundsSan Antonio, Texas

Overview

Hops & Hounds River North is an outdoor beer garten, coffee shop, food truck park, and dog park located along the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River Walk.

Envisioned as a temporary activation of a highly desirable riverfront site, the project is designed for a five-year lifespan before the site will ultimately be developed into a high-rise residential complex. This limited duration presented a central design challenge: creating a space that feels permanent and rooted in its context, while remaining fully relocatable.

To achieve this, Beaty Palmer Architects designed a composition of four shipping container structures and a prefabricated cooler, all designed for ease of disassembly and relocation. The containers are strategically arranged along the front perimeter of the site to form a “thick” fence, framing an open-air beer garten space nestled beneath the mature trees along the San Antonio River Frontage.

The perimeter of the containers are clad in vertical blonde Garapa wood slats and are combined with matching wood slat fencing to make the five buildings appear as one cohesive structure.

At the end of its lifecycle, the entire project is designed to be carefully dismantled and reconstructed at a new site.
