Overview
This new primary education building is planned to serve 600 students and includes classroom, library, cafeteria, physical education, administration, and support facilities. The long, narrow 5 acre site of the existing school campus is also the site for the new school building. Since the program required keeping the existing facility in operation during construction of the new building, complex logistical problems had to be overcome in the design process.
The new building is designed as a long, narrow mass which both fits the geometry of the site and allows the new construction to nestle into open space behind the existing building. When construction was complete, the existing building was removed- becoming the new playground area for the school.
The exterior design imagery is intended to reinforce the formality of an important community landmark while maintaining a legible, comprehensible scale for students. Building forms, materials, and colors recall the historic styles of this Los Angeles Heights neighborhood.
